This one hour video program is designed to help the Radiation Safety Officer:
- Conduct annual refresher training for technologists
- Provide new employee radiation protection orientation
- Teach regularly scheduled continuing education sessions for nurses and others who work with brachytherapy patients or patients who receive radiopharmaceuticals
The first portion of the program is based on the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission's sample lecture outlines in NUREG-1134. topics discussed include:
- A brief history of the medical uses of radiation sources
- Levels of background radiation, including radon
- An overview of typical sources of ionizing radiation and techniques that help reduce radiation exposures
- Information on biological effects of radiation and its risks at typical occupational levels
- Management's commitment to safety and the RSO's role as a source of information, services and assistance to help employees keep their exposures ALARA
In addition, specific segments are provided on:
- Teletherapy
- Brachytherapy
- Nuclear Medicine
- Iodine 131 Therapy
In each of these sections, the focus is on the radiation protection safety procedures of the NRC requirements dealing with the medical use of byproduct material.
Provides general hospital employees with a basic understanding of radiation.
